Student Council

The Student Union of the University of Akureyri is the association of all enrolled students at the University of Akureyri. The union is primarily an advocacy organization for students, a support network, and a unifying symbol for its member associations and those who carry out official duties on its behalf. The Student Union oversees events in the fields of entertainment, sports, and family affairs, and supports its member associations in managing these matters within their respective departments. The union safeguards the interests of the student body as a whole, promotes the health and well-being of students, and works closely with university staff on public relations, advocacy, and other matters that directly or indirectly concern students. In addition, the union collaborates closely with other student advocacy organizations, especially through LÍS – The National Union of Icelandic Students.

The Student Council consists of a diverse group of individuals, where different perspectives and opinions meet. The Student Council holds the highest authority in matters concerning the union. It is composed of 16 members. Nine are elected at the union’s annual general meeting: the six members of the executive board as well as a quality officer, an equal rights officer and an environmental officer. Representatives of all member associations also hold seats on the council.
