The Student Union of the University of Akureyri (SHA) is a collective platform for students at the University of Akureyri and plays a key role in promoting their interests, voice, and participation within the university community. The union works to ensure that student perspectives have a meaningful impact on decision-making, both within the university and in a broader context.
The primary role of SHA is to safeguard the rights and well-being of students, promote a positive and supportive learning environment, and foster a diverse and vibrant student life. The union also provides guidance and support in matters concerning student rights and works systematically to improve services, facilities, and the overall student experience.
SHA places strong emphasis on collaboration, democratic participation, and transparency in all its activities. The union works closely with member associations, students, university staff, and other stakeholders with the aim of building a strong and inclusive community where all students can thrive.
SHA’s policy is based on strengthening student influence, promoting social responsibility, and contributing to progress in education, equality, welfare, and environmental issues. The association strives to be a leading force in student matters and to create a platform where initiative, solidarity, and the student voice can flourish.
SHA is an active member of the National Union of Icelandic Students (LÍS) and contributes to shaping and advancing student interests at the national level. The union also maintains close collaboration with FÉSTA, the Akureyri student housing association, and works proactively to improve housing security, facilities, and the quality of life for students.
In addition, SHA works to strengthen the position of students within the local community of the University of Akureyri and to foster strong connections with industry, municipalities, and other key stakeholders in the region. Special emphasis is placed on ensuring that services and advocacy reach both on-campus and distance students equally, so that all students have equal access to support, information, and participation in the association’s activities.
