National Union of Icelandic Students – LÍS

The National Union of Icelandic Students (LÍS) was founded in Akureyri in November 2013 as an advocacy organisation representing all Icelandic students.

The founding member organisations of LÍS are the Student Association of the University of Akureyri, the Student Council of the University of Iceland, the Student Association of Bifröst University, the Student Association of Reykjavík University, the Student Council of the Iceland University of the Arts, the Icelandic National Union of Students Abroad, and the Student Association of the Agricultural University of Iceland.
The Student Association of Hólar University was initially granted observer status and received full membership at the LÍS National Assembly in 2015.

The role of LÍS is to safeguard the interests of students in Iceland, as well as the interests of Icelandic students in an international context. At the same time, the organisation provides a collaborative platform for Icelandic student associations, takes part in international student advocacy cooperation, and works towards the coordination and improvement of quality assurance in Icelandic higher education.

Acting on a joint mandate from all member organisations, LÍS may conduct negotiations and represent its members in dealings with government authorities, the media, and other stakeholders.

The Student Association of the University of Akureyri (SHA) holds two representatives on the LÍS Representative Council, as do the other member organisations.
