Registration Fee Increase
The registration fee at the University of Akureyri was increased from 75.000 kr to 100.000 kr in February 2026.
This means that at the beginning of the academic year you are required to pay 100.000 kr. However, if you begin your studies in the spring semester, the registration fee is ISK 75.000.
Previously, the fee was 75.000 kr at the beginning of the academic year and ISK 50.000 kr if studies commenced in the spring semester.
What Is a Registration Fee?
A registration fee is a fee that universities are legally permitted to charge in order to cover the cost of all student services, excluding teaching.
Students with Disabilities and the Registration Fee
According to the University of Akureyri website (unak.is), under Studies → Tuition and Fees, the following applies:
“Students who have a certified disability rating of 75% are entitled to a 50% refund of the registration fee upon presentation of valid documentation to the Student Registry. The full registration fee must be paid before requesting a refund.”
This means that students who have paid the registration fee and have a 75% disability rating may contactthe Student Registry by email to request a 50% refund of the registration fee.
The email must include the following information:
- Your national identification number (kennitala)
- The bank account number to which the refund should be transferred
- Proof of disability rating (e.g. a screenshot of the disability certificate from the ísland.is app)
