On Friday, April 10, the University of Akureyri formally received the Green Flag at a ceremonial event held in connection with the university’s 2026 Sustainability Conference.
The flag was received by Áslaug Ásgeirsdóttir, Rector of the University of Akureyri, and Yvonne Höller, Chair of the Environmental Council, along with representatives of the Student Association of the University of Akureyri (SHA) on the Environmental Council for the 2025–2026 term, Daníel Skíði Reykjalín Ólafsson and Robert Heyburn Mealey.
The Green Flag is an international recognition awarded by Landvernd (the Icelandic Environment Association) that aims to promote environmental awareness and sustainability within institutions and schools. The recognition is granted to those who work systematically to improve environmental practices and foster greater awareness and responsibility in these areas.
Within the Student Association of the University of Akureyri, interest in environmental and sustainability issues has been growing rapidly. The association has set clear goals to strengthen this area within its own activities, empower students in environmental and sustainability matters, and support positive development within the university community. As part of this effort, a dedicated Environmental Representative of SHA was elected for the first time at the association’s most recent annual general meeting. This representative serves both on the University of Akureyri’s Environmental Council and on the SHA Student Council, with full rights and responsibilities.
The Student Association is extremely proud of its members and of the University of Akureyri for placing increased emphasis on environmental and sustainability issues in teaching, operations, and campus culture. The association looks forward to continuing to play an active role in developing this important area and supporting further progress toward a more sustainable university community.
